I was thinking of different songs that involve death and dying. Media has such an impact on our cultural and influence us to a large extent. In the song Stan by Eminem it expresses this a great deal. This song may be to the extreme but it shows how obsessed people can become over people in the media.

I agree that music influence all aspects in live, which of course includes death. Music has always been a way for different people to express their emotions, maybe for some as the only way they know how. In regards to this Eminem song, the music as well as the video are very emotional and display just one way of how death is portrayed in today’s society. I also found this video on youtube called Graveyard Music, which I thought was a mix of peaceful beat type music with just a hint of questionable creepiness factored in. The music is played with scenes from a graveyard during the day which I thought was very interesting to watch.

Stan by Eminem has always been a song that has intrigued me. The song tells a story of an obsessed fan that commits suicide and murders his pregnant wife when Eminem does not answer his fan letters. It’s powerful how detailed and explicit the song is when describing Stan driving off the bridge with his family. How could one sacrifice his loved one’s future in such a manner? There was a day in class where we discussed whether or not suicide is a selfish act. Although this story is fictional, it is selfish in all forms. Makes me wonder how many cases are identical to this one and why someone would go to such an extreme.
ReplyDeleteThe song I posted below is very different from the song you posted, but I think that there are parallels. The song I put the link for is bu Jet and it is a song written by two brothers in the band and the lyrics are supposed to be sung to them by their recently deceased father. It is a freat song; you should take a look at it. I love Eminem too, but this song is one I would want played at my funeral.

ReplyDeleteHere is a song that I actually really love, "If I die young" by the Band Perry. It takes a different take on death than most other music I've heard. I find it quite beautiful and actually find myself smiling and singing along when it's on the radio, which is a surprising response to a song about death. I feel like they chose upbeat, almost cheerful music and the lyrics talk about dying young from the perspective of the deceased. It's almost hypnotic hearing her talk about how she's "never known the loving of a man, but it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand." I feel like it sends a positive message that even though it is sad to lose someone young, the important thing to remember is the experiences they did get to enjoy during their life. Very great song to listen to if you've never heard it!
