Pick Your Death: Firing Squads or the Electric chair

Talk about going old school, Rep. Brad Drake filed a bill this week that would end the use of lethal injection in Florida executions. Instead, those with a death sentence would choose between electrocution or a firing squad.(Republican of course-Bias opinion here). In a way this makes me question about what happens to the felons who want to die in peace, have healed and forgiven themselves and the families they hurt. I see this going forward in Texas as no problem, after all capital punishment is every day. What are your thoughts? If someone killed your family member, would you want them to suffer or die easy?

  1. Although those with a death sentence have committed horrific crimes, I believe that they still deserve the right to make peace not only with themselves, but with the families they hurt in the process. If someone killed my family member, of course my initial reaction would be to kill them and have them suffer the same way, but once I settled down, I wouldn't want to stoop to their level and feel the guilt of ending someones life for the rest of mine. Revenge is always the irrational thoughts of someone who is extremely angry, but the aftermath of such acts often leaves a worse feeling than they began with. I certainly wouldn't want them to die easy. Having them realize the pain and agony they caused me and forgiving them would be my last mission to moving on.

  2. I feel that regardless of how you look at it, the death sentence is wrong for the most part, but I think that lethal injection should be the only option. Let someone have a relatively decent death, instead of a violent end.

  3. I agree with the comment left by Vinny, because it is wrong to kill in my opinion. However, I would argue that there are ways of using a firing squad that could be as painless as lethal injection; or at least close to it. Specifically targeting areas of the brain which initiate pain reactions and take these areas out quickly, do this along with shots to the vital organs and the person will die instantly. I know that it sounds cruel, and I am not all for this idea, but it seems like it would be painless and much cheaper (as lethal injection is very costly). I would like to restate the fact that I am against killing someone regardless of their crime. Two wrongs do not make a right. The people who put death sentences on criminals have been mistaken in the past.

  4. This reminds me of a movie I saw, I believe in a class. . . I'm not sure what it's called but there was a scene where someone was being electrocuted as capital punishment and there was a specific process that had to be followed, including putting wet sponges on the head and putting something over the head. It was supposed to make the death quicker, but the guy setting it up intentionally didn't do it correctly and the witnesses were horrified that the man did not die immediately. They had to repeatedly turn the machine back on until he was really dead, and the scene was quite horrific. If anyone remembers the title of that movie please post it! Anyways, I personally don't believe the death sentence should be used except for extreme cases (and I mean EXTREME cases such as terrorism, mass murder) not for one-time offenses. I am not a fan of the capital punishment, but I do recognize there are some people that are so horrible and vicious that have killed on a mass level that would be much safer to have killed rather than risk the possibility that they somehow escape or continue their influence from prison. I feel that although lethal injection is costly, it shouldn't be used enough for that cost to really make that huge of an impact. I don't feel reverting back to a firing squad and the electric chair are humane options and is not worth the lower cost.

  5. I feel like with being on the other side of the argument, where my husband was actually killed by another human (there was no "criminal" act committed so therefore, the man who killed him never served any jail time... enough though he was supposed to) I would say that I don't think I would necessarily want the person to suffer or be in any sort of agonizing pain, but I wouldn't want them to have a good peaceful death via injection either. I don't know if it's because I am still really angry about it all, but I would feel like maybe this man got what he deserved. If that makes me a bitter person, then so be it. But until you have walked in my shoes and actually experienced what it's like to lose someone so close to you, you can't really judge.
